Peer-Tutor Training Process

As a highly rated professional tutor since 2007 (subjects = Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Calculus, SAT/ACT/MCAT Prep), I bring my experience to bear on this process. I am the trainer of the STEM peer-tutors.

Peer-tutors usually know their content (acing the course is often the required qualification for peer-tutoring), but quality tutoring also requires that the tutor know how to teach the content.

I thus train STEM peer-tutors as follows:

  1. Trainer holds mock tutoring sessions w/ peer-tutors over the Summer or Winter Break immediately prior to semester.
  2. Trainer observes 1-2 lectures (w/ professor’s permission) of each subject in which he is training a peer-tutor.
  3. Trainer observes 1 peer-tutoring session (w/ BOTH student & peer-tutor’s permissions) of each peer-tutor.
  4. Trainer discusses observations & suggestions w/ peer-tutor EITHER immediately after 1st session OR immediately before 2nd session.
  5. Trainer observes following peer-tutoring session (w/ BOTH student & peer-tutor’s permissions) of each peer-tutor.
  6. In next weeks, trainer observes peer-tutoring sessions (w/ BOTH student & peer-tutor’s permissions) of each peer-tutor.
